Jori Schmalz Photography
Through the wonderful world of myspace I was glad to have recieved a friend request from Jori Schmalz. Who turned out to be a artist in disguise. Usualy when I get a friend request I push it to the side and forget to really check out the profile. There was just something different about this one. I can't say what. Maybe it was the message attached to the friends request. Who really knows. Jori Shmalz is a 21 year old Illinois reisdent. Who seems to be fascinated with the world of photography.
What are some of your inspirations as a photographer?
My inspiration actually comes from the movie Rent. One of the quotes the movie is known for is, "No day but today." I believe in living every day as your last, because you never know what might happen. By taking chances and risks, you create more opportunities for yourself.
When did you start taking photos?
I started when I was 17. I got my first digital camera on my 17th birthday, actually. It wasn't very expensive, but it was all I had to work with at the time. I mostly just took pictures of my cat, and the plants around my house though. I didn't start taking photography seriously until Christmas of '06 when I got my Rebel XTi.
Have you always wanted to be a photographer?
No, I haven't actually. When I was younger I wanted to be a broadway singer. I've been singing ever since I can remember, so it has always been big part of my life. Once I graduated high school, I started getting into photography, and decided singing, for me, was more of a hobby rather than a possible career.
What type of camera do you use?
I own a Digital EOS Canon Rebel XTi. I have other various lenses for it as well, such as zoom and macro lenses.
Do you see yourself becoming a well known photographer?
I do, because in my opinion, I have to. Anyone with a dream has to have the drive and motivation to not only become what they want, but be good at it as well. Sonny Moore, one of my heroes, once said, ""Once you look Madonna, Divinci, Vangoh, or whoever your hero may be, and say "I could never do that." that's when you've already lost. You are just as good as anyone else."" I have to believe in myself, because if I can't even do that, how can I expect other people to believe in me?
What has been your favorite band to photograph?
My favorite band to photograph is definitely A Kidnap In Color. I've seen them mulitple times, and each time they become more and more fun to not only watch, but to photograph as well. Every member is so passionate about what they do, that it shows when they perform. It's much more enjoyable for me, not only as a photographer, but as a fan, to photograph people who love what they do.
Tell us some random facts about yourself?
I have ten cats! My family has 5 indoor, and 5 outdoor cats. My mom is that person everyone always refers to as the crazy cat lady. She's insane sometimes, but it makes life all the more interesting. Let's see, I don't like peanut butter! I can't even stand the smell of peanut butter, actually.
What type of music are you most drawn too?
I mostly listen to music that is upbeat and cheery. I'll be driving, and I'll get so into the music that I'll turn the volume up and roll down my windows so everyone around me can enjoy it as well! Music like that always puts me in such a good mood, that I can't resist it.
What advice would you have for a person who dreams of being a photographer?
Practice makes perfect. Not to sound like the typical Mom, but it's definitely something to remember. No one is born with all the knowledge and experience to automatically be the best, not only at photography, but anything for that matter. Take pictures of anything and everything, because you learn something new with every picture you take. Even professional photographers don't know everything, but the more experience you have, the better.
Persoanlly what is your favorite photo you have taken?
I'd have to say it's a tie between this one of Jay from Just Surrender:http://a258. ac-images. myspacecdn. com/images01/36/l_bc83905c7529c1d0b0022fbf84326bc9. jpgor this one of Derek from Mayday Parade:http://a63. ac-images. myspacecdn. com/images01/96/l_41d2f6e96814c536773880614fc76246. jpg

Interview: Oh, Hush!

Oh, Hush! is a band that anyone on myspace should know. They keep there identities hidden but still have a hugeee fan base. Check them out at www.myspace.com/ohhushmusic
Q1:1. So, the !...was the idea to use different punctuation taken from panic at the disco or did you guys just want it?
A1:Haha. We've actually been accused of STEALING it from Panic! But I can honestly say there was no direct tie-in with Panic! on the "!" controversy. We just felt that using both a comma and exclamation point were most effective with our name!!
Q2:2.Speaking of panic at the disco and punctuation what do you think of the ! drop?
A2:I have no real opinion on it! (note: I'm going to use as many "!"s in this interview as I possibly can!!!??!!) I think what happened is they heard we had come out with the "!" and decided that the world wasn't big enough to have more than one band with a "!" in the name so they graciously gave us exclusive rights to the "!" so there wouldn't be any confusion. I'm pretty sure those guys will do just fine without the "!"
Q3: Do you think that peoples favorite colors reflect their personality and who they are?
A3:Interesting question. I think in some respects that's probably true. There's probably psychologists out there that study this stuff and there's probably a series of questions that you can ask people and figure out personality traits based on their answers to seeminly unrelated questions. I dunno how far I'd take this theory but just in general, I would think that someone who's fave color is black is probably more of a melancholy-type person and someone who's fave color is pink is probably more outgoing and maybe bubbly. But again, I'm sure there's a million exceptions to these ideas. So I guess to answer your question, I'd really like to do a few more years of research on this topic before giving an official answer. :-)
Q4:Do you have any influences music wise? Or not music wise?
A4:I think there's a great mixture of musical and NON-musical things that influence us. Certainly the bands in our top friends are big influences on what we do. Cobra Starship's first album was groundbreaking!! Butch Walker is the greatest singer/songwriter/performer/producer/superhero on the planet!! We go back to bands like The Beatles who were pretty much the only band to write 150 amazing songs!! We're also influenced by a lot of things. Pop culture is everywhere and it's really interesting and sometimes fun to poke fun at. I like to do lots of reading and certainly books influence what we write our songs about. Movies are also a great influence because movies usually happen the way we WANT things to happen (which reality often does NOT do). We're also heavily influenced by Charles Shaw!!
Q5:So when do you think you'll tell us who you all are?
A5:This answer would require us to have a plan. And from the very beginning, we've had pretty much no plan with this thing! We make it up as we go. So we're not gonna change that mindset anytime soon. All I can say is that at some point, when we know the time is right, we will tell ya who we are and it will be every bit the wait and anticipation!! (Unless of course we play the VMAs this year, in which case, you'll see us then!)
Q6:This may give us a hint to who you are but what kind of hair do you prefer on your head?
A6:Hahahahaaa Great question!! I prefer the soft, touchable kind of hair best!!
Q7:What do you think about disneyland/world?
A7:Greatest place on earth!! I actually haven't been to either in quite a few years but it's tough to beat Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain and I'm sure there's some other Mountains there as well!! I remember thinking the Hall of Presidents was the stupidest "ride" as a little kid and then I went there a few years later and appreciated it a bit more!! Haunted Mansion rules!! Mr Toad's Wild Ride rules!! Epcot is pretty amazing as well!! Am I even talking about the right place here??? Man, I need a vacation!!!
Q8:What is your favorite fruit?
A8:A wise friend of mine once told me that the most underrated fruit was the pear. He felt it was every bit as tasty as the apple and easier to eat and cheaper to buy. But of course the apple is always seens as the "better" fruit. I've recently been a big fan of the cantalope. Very tasty and orange! Peaches are tasty and fuzzy!! Aren't tomatoes a fruit???
Q9:What is your favorite brand of guitar/drums/keyboard/bass/whatever you play?
Q9:I play a little of all of that depending upon the day. But I'd say my fave brand is definitely Fender. They've been really great over there and take care of our needs with guitars and basses whenever we need anything. They also own 100 different companies as well and get us gear whenever we need it. And it's always nice to plug those companies who endorse you in interviews! They like that :-)
Q10:Do you ever think that Oh, Hush! will release a cd?
A10:Absolutely! 2008 is the year! I promise!! We're finishing up a bunch of new songs right now and are trying to put together the songs for the CD in the next few months. We're gonna have a lot of surprises associated with the CD. New songs and new ways of delivering the music to y'all! We're also working on a number of ideas for additonal content that we will sell with the CD. It's gonna be very exciting and we'll have more details (and more songs!) available for ya real soon on our myspace page!!!
Us:Once again Thank you!
Oh,Hush!:THANK YOU!!!

Concert Review: Honda Civic Tour

I realize that HCT is almost over by now but I must say it was an AMAZING show. It was my first time seeing any of the bands there and they did not disappoint. I went to the opening day and the show was almost flawless. If your into that music its DEFINITELY a must go to gig.The environment was amazing, the bands were full of energy, and the crowd was ecstatically happy. The projector screen was a nice touch and the crowd really reacted to what people would text up there. Things like "scream if you love panic" would get loud yelps and woots. While things funny like "I'm tighter then and emo kids jeans" got laughs. This show most certainly pleased the younger teen crowd and adults alike. So kids bring your parents because they proboly will enjoy it and maybe buy you a shirt or something. Or bring them to show how much you love them.
Phantom Planet (or the OC theme song band)
Soon we should be getting you review of Bamboozle 08 and later after that one of Warped tour!
